Deep Water Plants
Deep Water Plants - Hardy
Deep water plants usually have their roots in aquatic soild in a submerged pot. Dominating this category is the Hardy Waterlily, probably the most popular water garden plant. Many varieties are available, both as mature plants in pots and as tubers which can be planted.
All types of Hardy Waterlilies feature dramatic fragrant flowers that bloom just above the lily pads. Many colors are available. Hardy Waterlilies can be left in the pond during the winter as long as the planting medium does not freeze through. In severe climates, they can be removed from the pond and stored in a cool moist medium, such as sawdust or burlap.
Deep Water Plants - Tropical
Tropical Waterlilies, although more difficult to grow than their hardy cousins, offer more spectacular blooms. They are held by thick stems above the water surface. Both day-blooming and night-blooming varieties are available. They need water temperature no less than 65 degrees Farenheit.
Another popular tropical plant is the Lotus. While expensive, the Lotus yields large dramatic flowers nearly six inches across. In late summer, the blossoms shoot as high as five feet above the water's surface. They love heat. The buds are large and pointed, opening into fragrant bowl-shaped flowers. Colors range from pure white to yellow and dark pink. The interesting seed pods are often dried and used for indoor arrangements.
Other varieties include the Nymphoide family and the Water Hawthorne. While the tropical varieties can be overwintered indoors, many gardeners choose to treat them as annuals, replacing them each spring. However, if you choose to keep tropicals for the next season, try an aquarium heater in a small tub. .
